PE is a Japanese measurement of line thickness (not breaking strain). Different line types of course will have different breaking strains. For example a high-end 12-strand line with a PE 1 thickness may break at 22lb, while a less expensive 4 strain line with a PE 1 thickness may have a breaking strain of 12lb. Both lines are the same thickness but they have different breaking strains. When it comes to listing spool capacity for a reel a PE listing is more correct than listing breaking strain. We could say for example that a reel will fit 300m of 20lb, but this is prone to mistakes because one angler may use a thin 20lb line and get 350m of line on the reel, and another could use a thick 20lb line and only get 250m of line on the reel. I hope this explanation helps.
