The FG knot generally involves a thinner mainline (braid & PE) attached to a thicker leader (mono & fluro). The thinner mainline results in a thinner profiled knot and a knot that lays and packs down easier when tied. Of course you could use a thicker mainline, the result would be a thicker profile knot and a knot that would be a little harder to tie and pack down due to the increase in line diametre.
